As we are already a week into the new year of 2015 one of my new years resolution is to spend more wisely and earn more points than ever before using different techniques. This year will be devoted to the best use of frequent flyer points. I will share a couple of them best use of frequent flyer points that anyone could use. By getting into the habit of spending at the right shops with the right credit card will reap huge rewards by the end of the year.
Online Shopping Portals
Many airlines around the world have introduced online shopping portals through a subset of their websites. This enables shoppers to earn at least two bonus point per dollar.
Qantas has an online shopping portal:

So currently if you click through the Ebay link through this website – it takes you straight to Ebay. But it will remember when you came from (so think of this as a referral commission).
Every dollar you spend at Ebay earns you two Qantas Frequent Flyer points on top of the credit card points you would pay for the item.
So putting that into perspective – for every dollar you spend at Ebay simply by going through the Qantas shopping portal – you are earning some easy but serious amount of points just with a couple of extra clicks.
Another great option is purchasing items with David Jones. You earn a bonus 5 Qantas points per dollar you spend as you click and are redirected to the David Jones Online website.
So for example if you are looking for an Ipad Air 2 which retails for around $1000 – you would normally have a few options.
- Pay $1000 in cash to get the item. You get no points. Nothing back in value.
- Go directly to the Apple Store in person or online. By paying $1000 on your credit card – you would get at most 1 point per dollar you spend. So therefore you get 1000 points. Better than nothing right? This is what the majority of people would do with no points insight.
- Go through the Qantas Online Shopping Portal – click on the David Jones website. By going through this way – you are earning the 5 bonus points per dollar plus the 1000 points you get on your credit card. So you are receiving 6000 points for buying this item!
Examples like above is where every item that you purchase – if done smartly and knowing where and how to shop – will create a faster points accumulation. From my estimations shopping like the above will quicken your points total at least 2x to 5x faster.
Make it your goal this year to use your money more wisely with a goal at the end. Never spend money if you cannot help it if you do not receive any points back that is quite substantial.
