CX First Class HKG to ORD dining 10

Date: Thursday 16th April
Departure Time: 11:55am
Duration of Flight: 14 hours 6 minutes

As I was using my US Dividend Miles to redeem this flight – I was excited to try this product as I have heard so much about it and wanted to try it for myself.

For check in – as I was in first class – we were given priority to board before any other class. As I was departing Hong Kong to go to America – it is a requirement for them to check your bags again.

Seat

There are 6 First Class seats in First class on this flight. I was seated in Seat 2D. It is a 1-1-1 configuration of 2 rows so I had the middle seat. Each person had aisle assess.

The seat itself could fit 2 people quite comfortably. The length of the "pod" is around 2 metres – so long enough for most people to sleep when the seat turns into a flat bed.

Entertainment Unit

The screens are quite large and provide stacks of entertainment and music. It is called Studio CX – I enjoyed watching a couple of Hong Kong movies and listening to some Cantopop.

Service

The flight attendants were very delightful and attentive to my requests. When the entertainment unit needed to be fixed as it had stalled – they rebooted it right away.

Food/Dining

I was provided a Crab canapé when I first sat on my seat. I was also given orange juice and water.

Below is the menu for this dining experience:

Amuse Bouch – the official name for the crab meat canapé

Lunch:

Caviar and Champagne – served with traditional garnishes of blinis, chive, cream fraiche and chopped egg

International Menu:

Roasted red pepper soup

Mesclun salad with asparagus, sun-dried tomato
Balsamic vinaigrette

Grilled USDA Certified Angus beef striploin with Bearnaise sauce and shallot sauce, roasted Portobello mushroom and pumpkin, fingerling potatoes with parsley
Or
Pan-fried chicken breast with red wine sauce, creamy mixed mushrooms, green beans, capsicum and pumpkin
Or
Spinach and ricotta ravioli with mixed mushroom in white cream sauce

Chinese Menu:

Pork soup with marrow and red dates

Cold plate – pork shank terrine with black vinegar

Fresh water gaoupa with superior sauce, served with steamed jasmine rice and braised baby Chinese cabbage

Breakfast:

Orange juice
Fresh seasonal fruit

Dace fish and pak choy congee, served with baked spring onion puff

Assorted breakfast bread and fresh butter served with preserves, honey and butter.

The great thing about this was they offered my favourite Hong Kong milk tea! Also having caviar was a great experience – absolutely delicious – an absolute indulgence in the dining sense.

As it was a 14 hour flight – one of the longest in the world – I had time to watch a few movies, do some work and take a nap before departing the plane.

Out of the 14 hours – I slept for about 4 hours on the flat bed. They give you 2 pillows – one large and one small. I was able to double up on the pillows while sleeping. Sleeping 4 hours is pretty good considering my body clock was still working on 6pm time when it was really 6am time in Chicago.

The only disappointment I can think of for the flight was the fish and cuttle fish in ho fun noodle soup that I had as part of the breakfast – the noodles were quite chewy – it was not cooked long enough.

Conclusion

Great flight – I was able to watch a few movies, do some work and enjoy some great meals. Now comparing this to Japan Airlines first class – I would actually have to give the upper hand to JAL. They have a better seat offering where it was wider and newer. Cathay Pacific First class is still great though because of the attentive service and would have no hesitation to fly on it.
